A new Mars Express discovery has revealed a rare “butterfly-shaped” crater in the Idaeus Fossae region, formed by a shallow-angle impact that splashed debris into wing-like lobes. The fluidized material hints at past subsurface ice or water, while nearby volcanic mesas and ridges point to a complex geologic history — offering fresh evidence that Mars was once far more dynamic and possibly habitable than previously believed.
