On Dec. 25, 2023, the James Webb Telescope captured rapidly changing auroras on Jupiter, puzzling scientists. A study published May 12 reveals that the infrared-emitting molecule H3+ lasts only 2.5 minutes before being destroyed, challenging previous assumptions. These findings could reshape our understanding of how Jupiter’s atmosphere is heated and cooled.
